The Setting

Lunalilo Home 2003

Lunalilo Home is located on five expansive, landscaped acres, and is situated on the western slopes of Koko Head in Hawai'i Kai. In a quiet residential neighborhood, the entrance is graced by mature shade trees and a large porte cochere that greets visitors. The grounds have paved walking paths lined by plumeria, bougainvillea, hibiscus, crown flower, ti leaf plants, white ginger, pikake, antherium, `ohia, croton, helekonia, `ohai ali`i and various fern.

The main building, constructed in 1918 of steel and concrete, and recently renovated has wood floors, two fireplaces, and a grand staircase. Its entire frontage is an enclosed veranda that overlooks the verdant grounds, famous Diamond Head in the distance, and refreshing Maunalua Bay.

A large sun lāna'i lined by shower trees and gardens is at the back of the building from which a clear view of the entire Koko Head may be enjoyed.

The entry into the residence is through the "Koa Room" with its koa rockers and fireplace above which rests a portrait of King Lunalilo. This lead to a bright and refreshing dining room lined by French doors that allow the rays of the sun to bring warmth to the residents and their guests. An air-conditioned "'Ohana Room" in which activities to stimulate the mind, body, and spirit are held also doubles as the reception area for numerous volunteer group, many of which perform familiar Hawaiian songs and dance – often joined by the residents and staff.
